The environmental benefits of adopting green office solutions are evident, but many business managers still feel like sustainability is an expensive investment that has to be made in spite of, and not because of, its effect on the bottom line. This is not necessarily the case, however, as there are many financial rewards to be had by companies that choose to go green.

In a recent article, the CEO of British workfare organization Avanta lays out a few of the ways environmental solutions can improve business results:

  • Lower utility bills: The most obvious way that going green leads to savings is by cutting utility costs. Energy-saving measures such as using LED or fluorescent lights or turning the heat down slightly in the winter also save money. Even the cost of replacing old equipment is quickly made up for by the lower utility bills.
  • Improved reputation: Now more than ever, a company’s image in the community has a major effect on its business performance. Consumers are very aware of businesses’ reputations and, given the choice, will not hesitate to switch to a competitor if they feel more comfortable with another company’s environmental record. In industries where large contracts can be awarded on the basis of an open competition, green solutions can be the deciding factor.
  • Improved employee wellbeing: Like consumers, employees are growing more sensitive to companies’ environmental practices. Naturally, employees will be more comfortable, happier and, therefore, more productive if they’re at ease with their company’s sustainability efforts. This can also give a business an edge in recruiting top candidates whose services are in high demand.
